Między innymi tak zwany
Wielu tłumaczom spore
trudności sprawiają dwa skróty: m.in. i t.zw. Dlatego, że nie mają oczywistych odpowiedników
w języku angielskim. Przeważnie oddaje się je przez among others / among other things oraz so-called.
Nie są to jednak szczęśliwe tłumaczenia, m.in. z powodów szyku w zdaniu.
Poszukajmy lepszych, bardziej naturalnych rozwiązań.

Problem z among others
/ among other
things/ inter alia polega na
tym, że są to sztuczne twory, w środowisku języka angielskiego nie występują „w
naturze”, w każdym razie jeśli się już pojawiają, to bardzo rzadko. M.in.
dlatego, że psują szyk zdania, „wystają z szeregu”, a już zwłaszcza jeśli wyskakują
w tłumaczeniu i rozdzielają np. podmiot i orzeczenie (subject and predicate/verb) lub orzeczenie i dopełnienie (predicate/verb and
direct object). Spróbujmy przetłumaczyć zdania z m.in.
inaczej, bez dziwolągów typu among others / among other things. Oto kilka
przykładów:
Dzieci lubiły m.in. lody czekoladowe na deser.
One of the things the children loved for pudding was chocolate
ice-cream.
Chocolate ice-cream was one of the children’s favourite puddings.
Dzieci lubiły m.in. hamburgery i lody czekoladowe na
deser.
Some of the things the children loved were hamburgers and chocolate ice-cream for pudding.
Hamburgers and chocolate

Tak zwany
Tu problem polega na tym,
że zwyczajowy przekład – so-called – może oznaczać, że kwestionujemy
słuszność samej nazwy. Np. wyrażenie his so-called wife może być zakamuflowaną aluzją,
że np. nie mają ślubu, lub – że mają ślub, tylko od lat żyją w separacji.
Aby
uniknąć niechcianych insynuacji, możemy w przekładzie skorzystać z innych
sposobów oddania polskiego tzw.:
W środę zacznie obowiązywać nowa tzw. czarna lista rajów
podatkowych.

W tym przypadku można śmiało opuścić tzw. – ponieważ zarówno blacklist , jak i tax haven, to utarte metafory
języka angielskiego.
W przypadku nieruchomości i praw
nabytych w latach 2007-2008 aby nie zapłacić podatku trzeba udokumentować co
najmniej 12 miesięcy nieprzerwanego zamieszkania w danym lokalu (budynku). Jest
to tzw. ulga
meldunkowa.
If you acquired property and

Wreszcie możemy so-called
zastąpić cudzysłowami. W takim przypadku efekt sarkazmu pozostaje, może nawet w
formie spotęgowanej:
He arrived with his so-called wife. = He
arrived with his “wife.” But next day it
turned out that they were not married.
