Porady starej wyjadaczki dla młodych tłumaczy 22

The Elusive Present Tense – czas teraźniejszy nieuchwytny

Polacy „znający” język angielski słyszeli o dwóch czasach teraźniejszych: Present Simple i Present Continuous.
– także może  wystąpić w przypadku zdarzeń powtarzających się i wówczas nieraz towarzyszą mu przysłówka i wyrażenia przysłówkowe takie jak: every day, now and then, once in a while, often, sometimes, never.

I am having a party tonight.  Dzisiaj u mnie [jest/będzie] prywatka.
They have a party every week. Co tydzień urządzają prywatkę.

Fred has a couple of drinks every night.Fred popija sobie – codziennie po kilka kieliszków.
Next week he’s having an operation before he goes into detox.W następnym tygodniu czeka go operacja przed przyjęciem na odwykówkę.

They are having / planning a June wedding. W czerwcu mają /planują się pobrać.
You can call him a special type of the marrying kind – he marries them and then walks out on them. To szczególny typ żonkosia – poślubia i porzuca.
You’re not listening to what I’m saying.
You never listen to me. – Nigdy mnie nie słuchasz.

Pewne użycia  Present Continuous  mają bardzo konkretne znaczenia:

They’re taking the matter to court. – Wnoszą sprawę do sądu. / Występują na drogę sądową.

Natomiast użycie Simple Present w zdaniu:

I expect an apology. – Oczekuję przeprosin.

- można przeciwstawić następnym zdaniom:

I’m expecting guests tonight. – Dzisiaj się spodziewam gości.

Oraz:
She’s expecting…

A teraz kilka autentycznych dylematów:

Ekspozycja prezentowana jest w czterech salach wystaw czasowych  Collegium Maius.

Zdanie to przełożono z chybionym doborem czasownika:

*The exhibition takes place in four rooms for current exhibitions in Collegium Maius.

Poprawiamy:

The exhibition is being held in four rooms for temporary exhibitions in Collegium Maius.

Problemem była tu niewłaściwa selekcja to take place zamiast np. to be held. Natomiast wybór innego czasownika umożliwia nam zastosowanie Present Simple, np.:

The exhibition is presented in four temporary exhibition roms in Collegium Maius.
The exhibition is on display in four temporary exhibition rooms in Collegium Maius.

I mamy tu 2 tłumaczenia do poprawy, oba ilustrują użycie czasu Present Elusive, ponieważ mieszają się w nich rozwiązania prawidłowe z nieco dziwnymi:

* The fashion for ecology becomes a reality. According to research commissioned by Bank Ochrony Środowiska, nearly three quarters of Poles believe that their behaviour does have an impact on the environment around them. The most important finding from the study is that more and more attention is paid to eco-friendly behaviour. . . . Another sign that ecology is in fashion is the fact that more and more people pay attention to what they eat. 12 % claim that they buy organic food.

Poprawiamy:

The fashion for ecology is becoming a reality. According to research commissioned by Bank Ochrony Środowiska, nearly three out of every four Polish people believe that their behaviour does have / is having an impact on their environment. The most important finding from the study is that more and more attention is being paid to eco-friendly behaviour. . . . Another sign that ecology is in fashion is the fact that more and more people are paying attention to / are showing concern for  what they eat. 12 % claim that they buy organic food.

I drugie tłumaczenie:

* Ecology is trendy and this becomes a fact. The studies, conducted for Bank Ochrony Środowiska (Bank for Environment Protection) show, that nearly ¾ thinks that their behaviour influences the surrounding environment. The most important conclusion is, that we pay more attention to our way of life in order to help to protect the environment. . . .  The other factor indicating that eco is trendy is that more and more people consider what they eat.

Poprawiamy:

Ecology is trendy and this is becoming a fact. A survey conducted for Bank Ochrony Środowiska shows that nearly three-quarters of the Polish population think that their behaviour is influencing the environment. The most important conclusion is that we are paying more attention to our lifestyle to help to protect the environment. . . .  The other factor indicating that eco is trendy is that more and more people are being choosy over what they eat/ are eating.

Kolejny tekst polski:

*Józef Dielt, the president of Kraków, visited Kleparz in 1871 and said: “The cobbled surface of the Kleparz marketplace, where grain is being sold, is in such a poor condition that it is very difficult to walk or to cart stuff there. It is being soiled and fouled and during market days it is impossible to clean it. That is why dust clouds cover the whole area, which is oppressive especially during a dry spell.” . . .  “Now it is one of the cheapest or even the cheapest marketplace in Kraków,” says Wiesław Nalepa, the president of the company. “Farmers from the surrounding villages are selling their products there. There are 250 small businesses run by 800 people. There are also manufactured goods being sold. Not only is Stary Kleparz visited by the inhabitants of Old Town but also by others.” . . .  Stary Klaparz is famous for numerous charity events, which are being organized by the Congregation of Merchants . . .

Poprawiamy:

On visiting Kleparz in 1871, the Mayor of Kraków Józef Dietl said, “The cobbled surface of Kleparz marketplace, where grain is sold, is in such a poor condition that it is very difficult to walk or to cart stuff there. It is soiled and fouled to such an extent that on market days it cannot be kept clean. That is why dust clouds hover  over the whole area over the gardens, which is oppressive for passers-by especially during a dry spell.”  . .“Now it is one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest street market  in Kraków,” says Wiesław Nalepa, the president of the company. “Farmers from the surrounding villages sell their produce here. There are over 250 small businesses run by about 800 people. The range of products offered on Stary Kleparz Market has been extended and now there are also manufactured goods being sold here // manufactured goods are also sold here. Not only is Stary Kleparz visited by the inhabitants of the Old Town but also by people from elsewhere.” . . .  Stary Kleparz is famous for numerous charity events, which are organized by the Congregation of Merchants . . ..

The Present Perfect  continued

Something bad has been going on for some time now.

Tymczasem niejeden Polak napisze:

               * Something bad is going on for some time now.

A nawet:

               * Something bad happens for some time now.

I have been sitting here for an hour waiting for you.

They have been working on the problem for a week now and still haven’t finished.

I have been dreaming of such a holiday for years, finally my dream will come true.

[…] Uproszczone procedury pozwalają od jesieni ubiegłego roku wyeksmitować dłużnika (bez prawa do lokalu socjalnego) do pomieszczenia tymczasowego, a nawet do noclegowni.

Pierwsza próba:

* As of last two years the amount of real estates seizured by the bailiffs was doubled, announced “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”…. As of autumn of the last year, simplified procedures allow to evict a debtor (without the right to be given a social housing) to adequate alternative housing or even hostel.

Poprawka:
In the last two years the number of properties seized by bailiffs has doubled, according to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. . . .  Since last autumn simplified procedures have allowed courts to evict a debtor without the right to social housing to alternative housing or even to a hostel.

Druga próba:

* During the last two years the number of real estates occupied by the debt collectors increased over two times,  informs "Journal Juridical Newspaper". The simplified eviction procedures allow – since autumn last year ––  to evict the debtor (with no right to social flat) to a temporary residence and even a dosshouse.

Poprawka:
Over the last two years the number of properties occupied by debt collectors has increased over two times, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reports. . . .  Since last autumn the simplified eviction procedures have allowed  courts  to evict a debtor who has no right to social accommodation to temporary housing or even to a dosshouse.

Przy okazji poprawiliśmy kilka innych ważnych błędów, np. szyk zdania, uzupełniliśmy wyrażenie z czasownikiem to allow (someone to do something) i przywróciliśmy właściwy tytuł czasopisma (ani ‘The Times’ ani nawet ‘Izwiestia’ – nie tłumaczymy na: ‘Czasy’…).

Przykład kolejny. Tytuł artykułu prasowego brzmi:

Historyk odkrył nazwisko anonimowego więźnia Auschwitz

A oto jego początkowe zdania:

Obozowe zdjęcie więźnia oznaczonego numerem 4267 przedstawia Antoniego Kocjana, oficera AK, który rozpracowywał konstrukcyjnie niemieckie latające bomby V-1 i V-2.  O swoim odkryciu poinformował historyk z Muzeum Auschwitz Adam Cyra.

* A historian discovered the name of an anonymous Auschwitz prisoner
* Historian disclosed the surname of an anonymous Auschwitz prisoner
* A historian revealed the name of an anonymous Auschwitz prisoner

Wiemy już, jak poprawić:

A historian has discovered the name of an anonymous Auschwitz prisoner
A historian has disclosed the surname of an anonymous Auschwitz prisoner
A historian has revealed the name of anonymous Auschwitz prisoner

HISTORIAN  IDENTIFIES  MAN  ON  AUSCHWITZ  PHOTO

*The crisis thwarts  the plans of lots of developers who wished to build energy-efficient settlements.

Poprawka:
The crisis has thwarted  the plans of lots of developers who wanted to build energy-efficient housing estates.

Ale mogło też być:

The crisis is thwarting  the plans of lots of developers who wanted to build energy-efficient housing estates.
Oraz:
The crisis has been thwarting  the plans of lots of developers who wanted to build energy-efficient housing estates.

*Ecology is trendy and this becomes a fact. The studies, conducted for Bank Ochrony Środowiska (Bank for Environment Protection) show, that nearly ¾ thinks that their behaviour influences the surrounding environment.
Poprawiamy:
Ecology is trendy and this has become a fact. A survey  conducted for Bank Ochrony Środowiska shows that nearly three out of four Polish people think that their behaviour is influencing the environment.

Choć może też być, na przykład:

Ecology is trendy and this is becoming a fact. A survey  conducted for Bank Ochrony Środowiska shows that nearly three out of four Polish people think that their behaviour has an influence on  the environment.

I dwie próby przekładu (z poprawkami):
* Rempex put up a legendary painting of Władysław Ślewiński The girl with a cat. A price was outrageously high – 4.6 mln PLN. Presumably, it is the highest price officially claimed for a painting on the domestic market. The current owner of Ślewiński's The girl with a cat  bought the painting in 2005 in Rempex, as it was being said, for an equivalent of million dollars plus an antique shop margin. Today he is selling the painting for 4.6 mln PLN (the antique shop margin, on the market about 10 % of the price, included).
Poprawiamy:
Rempex has put Władysław Ślewiński’s legendary painting, The girl with a cat, up for auction. The price is outrageously high – 4.6 M PLN. It is probably the highest price officially asked for a painting on the domestic market. The current owner of Ślewiński's Girl with a cat  bought the painting in 2005 in Rempex, apparently for the equivalent of a million dollars plus the antique shop’s commission. Today he is selling it for 4.6 M PLN (including the commission, which on the Polish market is  about 10 % of the price).

Wersja druga:
* Rempex put up for an auction a legendary painting ‘Girl with a cat’ by Władysław Ślewiński. The starting price was outrageous, i.e. 4.6 million PLN. It was probably the highest sum officially called for a painting on the national market. A current owner of ‘The Girl with a Cat’ by Ślewiński has bought this painting in 2005 in Rempex for the equivalent of one million dollar and the merchant’s commission, rumour has it. Today he sells it for 4.6 million PLN.
Poprawiamy:

Pierwsze zdanie można też tak przetłumaczyć:
Rempex is auctioning Władysław Ślewiński’s legendary painting, ‘Girl with a cat.’

[…] W 2009 r., zmieniając podstawę programową kształcenia, resort edukacji wymazał z przedszkolnych planów nauczania zajęcia z czytania i pisania.

* A myth that teaching reading and writing is forbidden gained its popularity between kindergarten teachers.  . . . In 2009 the Ministry of Education (MEN) erased reading and listening lessons due to the changes in core curriculum. Although there are no regulations in Polish law which would forbid conducting such classes, preschool teachers believe it would have some serious repercussions.

I poprawka:
